Civil Rights Protection

 

Certain laws exist to specifically protect people with disabilities and the elderly. Many private organizations and government offices have been created to ensure that those laws are being upheld. Links to these organizations and offices are provided along with information on where to report a complaint.

 

Americans with Disabilities Act Guide to Disability Rights Laws

The ADA provides this comprehensive guide to rights for persons with disabilities in areas such as telecommunications, housing, voting, education, air travel, and employment.

 

U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office for Civil Rights
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office for Civil Rights ensures that all people have equal access to Department of Health and Human Service programs. By doing this the department hopes to improve the health and well being of all people who participate in its programs.

 

Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Office for Civil Rights
The Federal Aviation Administration deals with discrimination in air transportation programs that receive federal assistance.

 

Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Office of Disability Rights
The Federal Communications Commission Office of Disability Rights ensures that people with disabilities have the same opportunities to telecommunicate as everyone else. On its site you will find the latest news, policies and laws on disability-related telecommunication issues. There is also a disability index, and policy handbooks.

 

Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Civil Rights Program
The Federal Emergency Management Agency Civil Rights Program provides technical assistance for persons with disabilities. It also handles complaints related to discrimination in the agency.

U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Office for Civil Rights
The U.S. Department of Agriculture Office for Civil Rights ensures that there is equal employment within the department. It will also handle all complaints related to discrimination.

 

U.S. Department of Commerce Office for Civil Rights
The U.S. Department of Commerce Office for Civil Rights works to ensure that everyone who participates in its programs has equal access. It is also concerned with equal employment opportunities for individuals who work in the department or applies to work for the department.

 

U.S. Department of Education Office for Civil Rights
The U.S. Department of Education Office for Civil Rights serves students who face discrimination by creating technical assistance programs designed to prevent or deal with discrimination. They also handle any complaints related to discrimination.

 

U.S. Department of Homeland Security Office for Civil Rights
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security Office for Civil Rights provides legal and policy advice regarding civil rights and liberties.

 

U.S. Department of Justice Disability Rights Section
The U.S. Department of Justice maintains a web page on disability rights. Its goal is to obtain equal opportunity for people with disabilities in the United States. The website has a section on frequently asked questions about the ADA. There is also a guide to disability rights laws, disability rights online news, and a status report on the enforcement of the ADA.

The U.S. Department of Labor Civil Rights Center prohibits discrimination by any organization funded by the Department of Labor. It also provides compliance assistance and training for people who receive grants from the department.

The U.S. Department of State Office for Civil Rights ensures equal opportunity in the department. It also advises the Secretary of State and other principle officers in making sure that they are following non-discrimination guidelines in the creation of laws.

The U.S. Department of Transportation Office for Civil Rights works to remove barriers to equal opportunity. Its focus is on those who work for the department, applicants for employment, and anyone who benefit from the departments' programs and services.

U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Office for Civil Rights
This site contains the latest information on the diversity of the workforce of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and civil rights law information.

 

U.S. General Services Administration Office for Civil Rights
The U.S. General Services Administration Office for Civil Rights administers three different programs related to civil rights laws. Its website outlines their three programs and provides information on civil rights laws and regulations.

Kauai Seniors Celebrate Healthy Aging!

The Agency on Elderly Affairs, in collaboration with its partners, is "Working Together for a Strong, Healthy Kauai".  Two programs being implemented to help seniors improve their health are the Chronic Disease Self Management Program (CDSMP) and the EnhanceFitness physical activity program. See photos of the Healthy Aging Partnership and seniors in the EnhanceFitness program.  Learn more about the EnhanceFitness class schedule.

RSVP Sponsors Local Book Drive

The Kauai RSVP program, sponsored by the Kauai Agency on Elderly Affairs, is accepting donations of books to be provided to Kauai's preschool and early elementary school age children.  In partnership with the Dept of Education Motheread/Fatheread and Story Exploring projects,  donations of books (see booklist) are being accepted through the month of September.  This project is being held in honor of 9/11 Day of Service and is part of a statewide Senior Corps book drive.  For more information, call RSVP at 241-4479. 

2010 HMSA Community Flu Clinics

Clinics are scheduled throughout the state.  This years' flu shot will also help protect again the H1N1 virus in addition to two other strains.

The Elderhood Project: Kūpuna Education Center

The Kūpuna Education Center provides a wealth of information to assist caregivers to adapting to the needs of Kūpuna in Hawaii.
