Communication Rights

 

Communication rights are based on the idea that all people should be able to participate in communicating their ideas and feelings with others., Communication needs may vary depending on the individual's specific disability. Access to alternative forms of communication provides persons with disabilities a greater opportunity to participate in society.

Breaking the Barriers
Breaking the Barriers is a national effort supported by TASH. It focuses on ensuring that people with disabilities have a way to communication with others.

The Public Voice
The Public Voice works to establish positive international legislation for all people. This website has information and articles about communication rights. It also reports on what is being done to promote and protect these rights.

The Federal Communications Commission
The Federal Communications Commission deals with consumer policy issues related to national communication systems. It also deals with the national system of telecommunications relay services and closed captioning.

The Telecommunications Act of 1996
The Telecommunications Act of 1996 requires that telecommunications products and services be accessible to people with disabilities. This website provides accessibility guidelines, discusses specifics about the law as it relates to disability issues, and gives links to additional resources.

Laws and Rules that Govern Telecommunications Relay Services (TRS)
This site is part of the Federal Communications Commission. It discusses different telecommunications relay services that are available and the laws that govern them.
