Healthy Aging in a Maturing Society: Lifelong Learning Is Part of the Prescription This article describes the importance of lifelong learning – from the American Council on Education (ACE) Center for Lifelong Learning. Kupuna Education Center The Kupuna Education Center offers training programs for family caregivers and paraprofessionals (nurse aids, home care workers) and continuing education courses that promote active aging (e.g., computer training, legal education, safety, healthy eating, etc). This program is administered by Kapiolani Community College. Osher Life Learning Institute Educational program that offers non-credit college-level course work courses, workshops, lectures and special multidisciplinary projects to encourage individuals from all walks of life to engage their minds, enrich their lives, and serve the community. Targets older adults, but open to all ages. The Institute is part of the University of Hawaii, Colleges of Arts and Sciences. Formerly known as the Academy for Lifelong Learning (ALL). Take Charge of Your Money3! A special educational series developed to help you with managing your financial affairs. This telecourse requires you to have access to local television in Hawaii to observe sixteen 55 minute presentations. The televised series features seminars by local professionals who share their expertise on numerous money management topics. UH Center on Aging The University of Hawaii Center on Aging offers an undergraduate Certificate in Gerontology, a telecourse on “Growing Old in a New Age” and resources on end of life planning. The Center also sponsors several research programs. UH Outreach College: Continuing Education and Summer Sessions Another education program that may be of interest to older adults from University of Hawaii offers a diverse number of credit, non-credit and community enrichment programs. UH Senior Citizen Visitor Program This program administered by University of Hawaii enables Hawaii residents who are at least 60 years of age to participate in the regular credit courses at UH Mānoa without paying tuition. Participants do not receive credit and do not have a formal transcript. Honolulu Community College - Emertius College/Honolulu SeniorNet Non-credit courses, cable broadcast programs and free community service classes. Non-credit courses focus on computer and internet instruction. Cable Television broadcasts include topics on finances, caregiving, health, nutrition, stress management, memory, etc. Free community service classes are special educational activities sponsored by Kaiser Permanente to promote prevention and healthy aging for those 55 years and older. The emphasis is on prevention, personal growth, and learning how to maintain a healthy lifestyle. SeniorNet members receive a discount. Leeward Community College Office of Continuing Education and Workforce Development offers credit and non-credit courses for workforce development, continuing education, and personal enrichment. Windward Community College Offers continuing education/life long learning opportunities, including non-credit courses in arts & crafts, business, computers, music, health and specialized classes for seniors (55+). Provided by Windward Community College Office of Continuing Education. City & County of Honolulu Parks and Recreation The Parks and Recreation department offers life enrichment classes for adults, seniors (55 years or older) and children in exercise, sports, music, arts & crafts, computers, cooking, English as a Second Language (ESL) and much more.
