Water Safety In the United States, there are about 4,000 unintentional deaths from drowning each year. The majority of victims are not wearing life jackets. Males are involved in about 80 percent of these incidents. Alcohol consumption is a major factor in water accidents. Young children, infants, and toddlers are also vulnerable to water accidents. These can occur in bathtubs and home swimming pools. Most of these incidents occur when there is no adult present for less than five minutes. American Red Cross
